What is Laser?

A laser produces a beam of highly concentrated light. Different types of lasers produce different colors of light.

What are different type of hairs?

Vellus hair: Fine and pale hair, it usually isn’t visible to the naked eye.

Terminal hair: thicker, fully pigmented hair most people consider “real hair” This hair is found on scalp, eyebrows, legs, backs, underarms, and genital areas.

What type of hair responses to laser?

Terminal hair but not Vellus hair.

How does hair grow?

Hair forms in a pouch-like structure below the skin called a hair follicle. What we see as hair is actually the hair shaft, which is the keratinized, hardened tissue that grows from this follicle.Everyone’s hair grows differently, depending on age, weight, metabolism, hormones, ethnicity, medications, and other factors. But all hair goes through three distinct growth phases:

  1. Active growth phase (anagen phase) This phase lasts up to several years. At any given time, the majority (85%) of our body hair is in this phase. During anagen, the hair has an abundance of melanin.
  2. Regressive phase (catagen phase) This phase lasts about two weeks, during which the hair stops growing but is not yet shed. About 3 – 4% of our body hair is in this phase at any given time.
  3. Resting phase (telogen phase) This phase lasts 5 – 6 weeks, at the end of which the hair falls out and a new hair begins to form. Approximately 10-13% of our body hair is in this phase at any one time.

How does lightsheer diode laser work?

During the procedure, the LightSheer diode laser pulses for a fraction of a second, The light emitted by the laser is absorbed by the melanin pigment in the hair follicle and converted to heat. The heat injures the hair follicle preventing its ability to produce hair.

An important part of the procedure is the cooling of the skin. The LightSheer diode laser’s special contact-cooling handpiece further protects and cools the upper layer of the skin before, during and after each laser pulse while directing the laser energy to the hair root. This patented method of epidermal preservation allows delivery of more laser energy deeper into the hair follicle.

Additionally, the LightSheer diode laser is able to treat a broader range of skin types than most other hair-removal lasers. It is delicate enough for a woman’s fine, sensitive skin and robust enough for a man’s beard, back, or arms. This high tech process treats numerous hair follicles at a time. Therefore, we can treat even the largest areas of the body both quickly and effectively.

What does laser hair removal feel like?

Laser hair removal is typically a very tolerable procedure. On a scale of 1-10 most patients rate it at a 3-4. The procedure is often likened to a rubber band snap. Certain areas may be more sensitive. Occasionally topical numbing cream is used for sensitive areas such as the upper lip.

How long does the treatment usually take?

Depending on the area to be treated, laser hair removal can take only a few minutes or over an hour. The most commonly treated areas, bikini line, upper lip, chin, underarms typically require less than 20 minutes for treatment.

Can I return to work and normal activity immediately after laser?

Yes, you can return to work and normal activities immediately. After laser hair removal, the treated site may feel like mild sunburn for a few hours or more. Slight redness and swelling surrounding the hair follicles is normal and is actually an indicator of a good clinical response. Although irritating preparations (glycolic acid, retinoid, etc.) should be avoided, make-up can be applied to the treated area shortly after treatment.

What skin color can be treated with lightsheer?

The LightSheer is safe and effective in the hand of experts for all color and type of skin. Because it is absorbed by melanin, laser hair removal is most effective on darker hair and is safer and easier to perform on lighter skin.

How many treatments are required?

The final result for every patient is different. The clinical outcome may vary depending on multiple factors including: site of the laser treatment, medical history, skin color and type, hair (color, texture and thickness), the patient’s compliance with pre/post treatment instructions, patient ethnicity, number of treatments and some other unknown factors determines individual responses to treatment.

The LightSheer diode laser most effectively disables hair that is in the active growth (anagen) phase. Because all the hair in a treated area may not be in the anagen phase, more than one laser treatment may be necessary to remove the hair that subsequently enters the growth phase.

In general, six treatments spaced every 4-8 weeks apart is recommended. On the average most patients can expect to achieve a 50-90% permanent hair reduction after 3 to 6 treatments.

What are the benefits of laser hair removal over other methods of hair removal?

Unlike shaving, waxing, depilatories and tweezing, laser hair removal provides a long-term growth delay and permanent hair reduction. Laser hair removal is fast and effective. Where electrolysis treats a single hair at a time, laser hair removal can cover large areas rapidly. This high tech process treats numerous hair follicles at a time. Therefore, we can treat even the largest areas of the body both quickly and effectively.
