How is sclerotherapy performed?

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure in which a sclerosing solution is injected directly into the targeted vein. The solution irritates the inside of the blood vessel, causing the treated vein to close and gradually fade as the body clears it.

At OC MedDerm, Dr. Parvin Shafa uses hypertonic saline for selected treatments. Other sclerosants, including foam formulations such as Asclera®, may be considered when appropriate.

Sclerotherapy is generally performed as an office-based procedure, and anesthesia is typically not required.

What to Expect During Sclerotherapy

1. Consultation and evaluation
   Dr. Shafa evaluates the visible veins and discusses your treatment goals.
2. Treatment planning
   The number and location of injections depend on the veins being treated.
3. Sclerosant injection
   A fine needle is used to inject the selected solution into the targeted veins.
4. Post-treatment care
   After treatment, you will receive individualized instructions for caring for the treated area and returning to normal activities.
5. Gradual improvement
   Treated veins generally fade gradually rather than disappearing immediately.

Who Is a Candidate for Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy may be appropriate for adults who are bothered by visible spider veins or certain small varicose veins and want to improve their appearance.

Suitability depends on factors such as:

• Size and location of the veins
• Number of veins being treated
• Treatment goals
• Medical history
• Previous blood clots or vein problems
• Pregnancy or breastfeeding status

How effective is sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is the most effective and the least invasive procedure to treat spider veins. It has been the primary treatment for small and medium vessel varicose veins for over 150 years. When sclerotherapy treatment is done on the spider veins, it improves the cosmetic appearance of the unsightly veins on the lower extremities and also relieves some associated symptoms with spider veins such as aching, swelling and night cramps.

What are the risks associated with spider vein injection?

Sclerotherapy is generally well tolerated, but like any medical procedure, it has potential side effects and complications. Temporary bruising, redness, tenderness, swelling, cramping, or skin discoloration may occur after treatment.

Less common complications can include inflammation, infection, blood clots, skin ulceration, allergic reactions, or changes in skin pigmentation. Dr. Shafa will discuss the potential risks and benefits during your consultation.

What is the expected result?

Results vary from person to person. Some treated veins may fade significantly after one session, while others may require additional treatments. The size, location, number, and characteristics of the veins can all affect the outcome. Your expected results and treatment plan will be discussed during your consultation.
