How is sclerotherapy performed?

Sclerotherapy involves the injection of a medical agent, called “sclerosant”, into the affected vein, resulting in collapse of the dilated visible veins and disappearance of them over the next few weeks At OC MedDerm, Dr. Shafa treats the veins with hypertonic saline, which is the most effective and natural to the skin and body. Alternative sclerosant, foam-type, such as Asclera is available and will be used upon patient’s request or if it is indicated. Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive office-based procedure with no anesthesia required.

How effective is sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is the most effective and the least invasive procedure to treat spider veins. It has been the primary treatment for small and medium vessel varicose veins for over 150 years. When sclerotherapy treatment is done on the spider veins, it improves the cosmetic appearance of the unsightly veins on the lower extremities and also relieves some associated symptoms with spider veins such as aching, swelling and night cramps.

What are the risks associated with spider vein injection?

The risks associated with spider vein treatments are minimal, such as mild discomfort and bruising. These can be controlled with icing before and after the procedure. A tiny dot-shaped bruising occurs at the site of needle insertion, lasting only a couple of weeks. The mentioned tiny bruises may leave slight brownish discoloration that should fade and disappear over the following couple of months. Occasionally while injecting larger veins, transient, a few seconds lasting, cramping of the leg muscles may occur. This is relieved by shaking the muscle. Soft tissue injuries, blood clots, and skin wounds have been reported in the literature but the risk is minute.

What is the expected result?

In general, after each sclerotherapy treatment, we expect approximately 50% improvement in the appearance of the spider veins. Let’s underpromise and say, if you see 30% improvement on the treated area, then with 3 sessions of treatments, an individual should expect 90% improvement on the area treated. Please keep in mind that with each individual, the amount of improvement will vary for each person.
