Accidents Happen Unexpectedly!

A Unique Experience from Dr. Shafa

I was in my residency rotation in the ER when we were informed about a surfer who had suffered a severe laceration along his entire calf. The wound was deep into the muscle and heavily contaminated with sand. Since I loved performing procedures, I immediately volunteered to take care of the patient.

It was an unforgettable experience!

Imagine dropping a large piece of raw meat on sand—how would you remove every grain? I cleaned the area, anesthetized it, and tried to irrigate the wound, but as expected, the sand particles were stuck. Finally, I had no choice but to remove them one by one. It took four hours to fully clean the wound before closing the laceration in layers and wrapping it.

Years later, I ran into the patient. He was very appreciative and showed me his legs, asking if I could find any scars.
