Typical Moles

Typical moles, also known as common moles or nevi, are moles that are usually requested to be removed for cosmetic purposes.

Typical moles can be congenital moles (developed from birth) or acquired mole ( developed throughout life)

Congenital Moles

At birth, a newborn may exhibit moles called congenital moles. Moles on the face or other frequently exposed areas of skin may be troubling for children psychologically, affecting their confidence and self-esteem. Congenital moles can vary in size from small to very large, ranging from less than 1 cm up to more than 20 cm in diameter. They can have different color, pattern, location, texture, and be with or without hair. If a child or adult is particularly troubled by a mole, consult Dr. Shafa for the cosmetic removal of such a bothersome skin lesion.

Acquired Typical Moles

This type of mole develops throughout your life, and they usually appear during childhood or adolescence anywhere on the body. On average, people have around 10 of such moles. Typical moles, called common moles, are usually round, flat, do not change over time, and are benign. They range in colors of flesh-colored, yellow, brown, or black, and range from 1 to 10 millimeters in size.

Depth of the typical moles matters

Depth, size, and shape of a mole are definitely major factors dictating the technique of mole removal. Typical benign moles are medically classified based on clinical characteristics and histological appearance as following

  • Junctional moles
  • Compound moles
  • Intradermal moles

Junctional Nevi – small and flat, superficial, characteristics of a newly developed mole

Compound nevi – Deeper into the skin, raised with or without color

Dermal nevi – largest size, raised, deep, smooth, or bumpy surface

Halo moles – are usually common junctional moles with a pale or halo light color ring around it
