What is Alopecia Areata?

It simply means areas of hair loss. It is a common autoimmune disorder presenting with unpredictable single or multiple patches of hair loss usually affecting the scalp, beard or eyelashes.

How common is it?

7% of the world’s population is affected by alopecia areata. Most cases occur before the age of 30.

What is the cause?

Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease. It occurs when white blood cells attack hair follicle cells resulting in a slow down of hair production. It seems that genetics are involved. Stress is also believed to be one of the major causes of this autoimmune disorder.

How does it start?

It can begin as coin-sized patches of hair fall. It is usually found by the patient while washing their scalp. Rarely, mild itching or burning sensations prior to hair loss may occur.
