What is varicose vein?

Varicose veins are enlarged veins that are swollen and raised above the surface of the skin. They can be dark purple or blue, and look twisted and bulging. frequently have a winding or worm-like appearance. Varicose veins are commonly found on the backs of the calves or on the inside of the leg. They develop when valves in the veins that allow blood to flow toward the heart stop working properly. As a result, blood pools in the veins and causes them to get larger.

Is this a common problem?

yes, varicose veins affect 1 out of 2 people over age 50. They are more common in women than men. hemorrhoids are also a type of varicose vein. Spider veins are like varicose veins, but they are smaller.

What causes varicose veins?

Increase in the diameter of a vein results in the malfunction of valves inside of the vein that are designed to prevent blood from flowing backward in the vein. An inherited weakness of the vein wall (genetic) and circulating hormones that relax the smooth muscle of the vein wall are the most common causes. Female have high level of such a hormone( Progesterone). Other causes of varicose vein are Pregnancies, obesity, Hormone replacement therapy, contraceptive pills, and prolonged standing poison. Since female have usually multiple risk factors for developing varicose veins, 75% are women and 25% are men.

How will the blood in my veins get back to my heart after all of the abnormal veins are removes or destroyed?

The backflow of blood in varicose vein and main superficial trunks, the great saphenous vein (GSV) and lesser saphenous (LSV) actually interfere with the normal venous return of blood.. Removal of these areas of abnormal circulation actually improves circulation of blood in the treated limb. It is this improvement in limb circulation that causes improvement of symptoms of tiredness and heaviness in the limb.

What is Spider veins?

These are small, thin veins that lie close to the surface of the skin. It usually occurs over thigh area. Although these super-fine veins are connected with the larger venous system, they are not an essential part of i.e. destroying of the vein is not going to effect the circulation.

Gradient compression stockings?

The properly fitted stocking can temporarily reverse the effect of vein disease and lessen the discomfort as well as skin damage.
Exercising, losing weight, elevating your legs when resting and not crossing them when sitting can help keep varicose veins from getting worse. Wearing loose clothing and avoiding long periods of standing can also help. If varicose veins are painful or you don't like the way they look, your doctor may recommend procedures to remove them.

Why do we develope Vein disease?
Genetic predisposition.

Estrogen relaxing effect on vein walls. This may explain why women are more likely to get spider veins than men. The upsurge of hormones at puberty, birth control pills, pregnancy, and hormone replacement therapy all have been connected to the development of spider veins. Age, Injury increases the chance of developing spider veins later on at that site, even if the injury occurred early in life. Prolonged periods of standing or flying on an airplane. Changes in pressure affects the internal venous system, where the large veins cannot withstand the back pressure and balloon out into incompetent veins
