Procedures to Facilitate Acne Treatment

Dr. Shafa will often need to combine prescriptions with procedures to help clear acne faster. These methods, which are described below, will be performed by Dr. Shafa or, in certain cases, by her skin care specialist.

When patients attempt to extract comedones and drain cysts themselves by squeezing or picking, they will cause worsening of the acne, scarring, and infection. Tissue injured by squeezing or picking can become infected by staphylococci, streptococci and other bacteria which may be very resistant to treatment.
At our office we offer you a spectrum of manual acne treatment from gentle spa-like facials, steam, deep skin cleaning, mask and facial massage done by our expert pleasant facialist all the way to if needed gentle pain free minor acne surgery or injection into acne lesion done by Dr. Shafa.

Comedon Extraction

For certain types of acne, such as some forms of comedones with hard, large, dry content- only at the beginning of treatment-it is beneficial to remove the contents of the lesions manually. By doing so, we can achieve better and faster results. latter with proper acne treatment we can prevent formation of such a skin lumps. Dr. Shafa uses a tiny, sterile device to extract whiteheads and blackheads with minimal discomfort. This procedure should only be performed by an expert under sterile conditions.

As you can see in the above pictures, this type of acne was treated only by proper extraction followed by using a mild cream to keep the acne from recurring. All were treated within just less than one month.

Drainage and Surgical Extraction

Some types of deep cystic acne respond poorly to medication. These may require drainage and extraction, also called “acne surgery”, which is performed by Dr. Shafa under sterile conditions. Such a procedure reduces the pain associated with these cysts, helps lesion to heal faster, and decreases the likelihood of permanent discoloration and scarring. At Irvine Dermatology Clinic, we are experts in the proper technique appropriate for "acne surgery".

Chemical Peels

At our facility, we also offer the use of steam and/or light chemical peels of salicylic acid or glycolic acid and other chemical agents to loosen blackheads and decrease acne papules. This is usually performed before extractions or microdermabrasion. Deeper and stronger chemical peels are also offered as a treatment for active acne, acne scars and skin rejuvenation.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is another alternative to unplugging acne pores. It uses a unique technique to scrub the skin, which is followed by the suctioning of tiny pores with a vacuum device. If Dr. Shafa feels that you will benefit from such a deep skin cleaning, it will be performed by her skin specialist. Such a procedure takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes. Microdermabrasion also stimulates collagen formation in the skin resulting in improvement of acne scar appearance. It is also performed to rejuvenate skin and correct color.

Acne Soothing Masks

Some of our masks we use are specially made for acne. It kills the bacteria, decrease the oiliness of the skin and and has a soothing effect by controlling skin inflammation (swelling, redness and associated pain).Masks may be applied after extraction or microdermabrasion to facilitate the healing process following these procedures. We offer a variety of masks that nourish your skin with vitamins, minerals and topical healing solutions.
